Record date.

The record date is the cut-off day a company uses to decide who qualifies for a dividend or other action.

Definition

If you are on the shareholder register on the record date, you receive the announced benefit. Because of settlement timing, you must buy a couple of days before the record date to be registered in time.

Worked example

If the record date is Friday, you typically must buy before the ex-date earlier that week to be eligible.
