Total return.

Total return is the full gain from an investment, including both price change and dividends.

Definition

Unlike price return, total return adds reinvested dividends and other distributions, giving a complete picture of performance. For income stocks, dividends can be a large part of total return.

Worked example

A stock rising 10% that also pays a 6% dividend yield delivers roughly a 16% total return.
