How To Understand Dividend Yield.

Dividend yield compares annual dividend income with the current share price. It is useful for income comparison, but investors should also review payout consistency, earnings support, and whether the share price has fallen sharply.

Step-by-step

  1. Find the annual dividend per share.
  2. Divide it by the current share price.
  3. Compare the yield with sector peers.
  4. Check whether earnings and cash flows support the dividend.
  5. Review ex-dividend dates and payout history.

Worked example

A 10% yield can be attractive, but it may also reflect a falling share price or an unusually large one-time payout.
